Probably there is something to all that, but it does not appear that Moses and Elijah spent their time with Jesus reflecting on the ins and outs of the Law and Prophets. Commentators have long pointed out that Moses represented the Sinai Covenant/Law (as well as the Exodus) and that Elijah represented the prophetic voice of the Old Testament as well as Gods covenant faithfulness in sending servants to continue speaking to and ministering to even a wayward Israel. After hearing such hard, perhaps even shocking, words a week earlier, now on the mountain the three disciples would have found great strength by seeing a glimpse of the coming glory in the resurrection, ascension, and second coming of Christ. And the way that God has chosen to carry out his redemptive purpose is to send his Son, Jesus, to bear our sins upon himself at the cross. This word, exodon, provides another parallel with Moses, who led the Exodus from Egypt. Or Isaiah the prophet who, in Isaiah 6, had this heavenly vision of God in full display of his glory and majesty. Now he selects an inner circle of disciples to go with him, thus signaling the importance of the journey up the mountain. Peter, James, and John already believed in life after death, but surely this moment dramatically increased their convictions that everything they had been taught about life after death was absolutely true. On one side of the bookshelf weve got Moses going up on Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments. The apostles are sent to preach and heal. They cannot encourage Jesus to stick with what they dont understand (and would resist if they did understand it). And we must be resurrected, for 1 Corinthians 15 tells us that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God. Test of true discipleship (Matthew 16:24-28; Mark 8:34-1; Luke 9:23-27) Immediately after telling his disciples of his coming suffering and death, Jesus told them they had to be prepared for similar treatment. The three dwellings (9:33, NRSV; booths in RSV) recall those used at the Festival of Booths (or Tabernacles), an annual harvest festival. On this mountain the subject (has been) death (Craddock, Interpretation, 135). pierce the gloom of sin and grief; Lukes disclosure concerning the conversation is highly significant for his account. Hebrews 10:31 ESV It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But there is something glorious, something heavenly that awaits them. The fireworks have ended. Sobering. The voice from the cloud says that we can always trust JesusListen to him!, We say, But Jesus is too idealistic to understand the bare-knuckles world in which I live! The voice says, Listen to him!, We say, Later, perhaps, but I have other things to do right now! The voice says, Listen to him!, We say, But I am not sure that I truly believe. The voice says, Listen to him!. Luke 9:28-36. This has been a mountaintop experience but not the kind about which persons write glowingly of sunrises, soft breezes, warm friends, music, and quiet time. They said it was as if a ring of light encircled her face. The voice from the cloud interrupts so that Jesus never responds directly to Peters suggestion to build booths. Jesus exodon leads us into the kingdom of God. Since this part of my sermon commentary is about Questions, Ill just ask a few of the ones that come to my mind in this startlingly odd passage. The cloud was the symbol of the presence of God at Sinai (Exodus 24:15-16; 34:5), and it symbolizes Gods presence for these three disciples. When Moses asked to see Gods glory, God replied, You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live (Exodus 33:20)but God continued, Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock. What he says about discipleship is also to be heeded. Moses had prophesied, Your God will raise up to you a prophet from the midst of you, of your brothers, like me. With no human or earthly voices available to encourage Jesus, his Father steps in to provide new voices in the conversation. They want to camp out with him on the mountain. Though its hard for us to grasp what happened here when Moses and Elijah appeared, to see them would have been sort of a pledge to the disciples of their own immortality. Moreover, the disciples of Jesus are to listen to him. All his teachings about love for God and for our fellow human beings are to be observed. A few years ago, I had an elder in my church whod disappear every two or three months. He was an eyewitness to the majesty and glory of Christ on that mountain. Well, Peter as usual is the first one to speak up. She lit up the room, and we all knew that this was the person we were looking for.. But the drama up there on that mountain seems to have been only partly intended to make an impression on the disciples. Either expression, as Stephen Farris points out in The Lectionary Commentary, could be the loose equivalent of saying about a week later. Yet, as Farris also suggests, in Lukes context the eighth day could be a prefigurement of the resurrection as well. Yes, the disciples themselves will suffer as they follow Jesus and proclaim him to the world. Scared out of their minds. Every once and so often, something so touching, so incandescent, so alive transfigures the human face that its almost beyond bearing. In the Transfiguration, the earthly Jesus shares for a moment the company of two great and worthy residents of heaven, Moses and Elijah. The glory of the Lord was revealed at his birth (Luke 2:9). Or they respond to Jesus talk about sacrifice and humility by incarnating its opposite in a wrangling over and jockeying for power and privilege in Jesus coming kingdom (see Luke 9:46-50). (9:29, 34-35). Commentary on Exodus 34:29-35. From the looks of the text, it would not be an unwarranted leap to think these three did not tell even the other nine disciples what had taken place. The committee interviewed several candidates, and each made a positive impression. We are told that the appearance of Jesus was as bright as lightning. Who knows what will happen to them now that they are in Gods presenceperhaps they will die!
